What happens at checkout
Choose Quay's action when a company goes over its credit limit
In a Quay policy, choose what checkout does over the credit limit: Monitor only changes nothing, Pay on order takes net terms off once the company is over, Block new orders stops orders that go over.
Quay is a Shopify app that enforces per-company credit limits and late-payment rules at B2B checkout for wholesale merchants.
Works on: any Shopify plan with B2B · About 2 minutes · Matches Quay as of November 2026
Choose the action in a policy
- In Quay, open Policies and click the policy’s name. To start a new policy instead, click Create policy (see Create a policy and assign companies).
- Under Enforcement, find Over the credit limit and choose Monitor only, Pay on order or Block new orders. The text under the menu says what Pay on order and Block new orders do at checkout.
- Click Save in the bar at the top of the page. If companies use the policy, Quay asks to confirm, for example “Update policy assigned to 4 companies?”. Click Update 4 companies.
- Quay shows “Saved. Recomputing enforcement for 4 companies in the background.” That means Quay is updating what checkout does for those companies. It usually takes a few seconds, and you don’t need to wait on the page.
The action applies to every company on the policy that has a credit limit and that your Quay plan covers (see Change your plan in Quay). A company with no limit is never over it.
What the buyer sees
- Monitor only: going over the limit changes nothing at checkout.
- Pay on order: once the company is over its limit, its orders are paid at checkout, not on terms, until the balance is back under. The order that takes it over the limit still goes through on terms. The buyer pays with any other payment method your checkout offers.
- Block new orders: any order that would take the company over its limit is blocked at checkout. The buyer reads “This order can’t be completed. It would exceed your company’s available credit.” followed by your contact line.
Set the contact line buyers read
- In Quay, open Settings.
- Under Checkout block message, type an address in Buyer contact email, or click Use store contact email.
- Click Save in the bar at the top of the page. Quay shows “Settings saved”.
You can’t change the wording of the message, only the contact. Under What buyer sees at checkout, Settings shows every message a blocked buyer can get. Under Every message below ends with, it shows the contact line: “Please contact our accounts team at” and your address. With the field blank, the line is “Please contact our accounts team.”
On Shopify Plus
Under Over the credit limit, a Plus store also sees the line “Whether checkout takes payment for that order is set in Settings.” That switch takes payment at checkout for the one order that takes a company on Pay on order over its limit: see Shopify Plus: take payment for over-limit orders. In Settings, the contact section is called Checkout messages and also shows what the payment terms notice says: see Add the Payment terms notice to checkout.
What happens next
Quay updates the companies on the policy in the background, usually within a few seconds, and their next checkout follows the new action.
